Voyage Across the Seas: An Educational Guide

The Age of the Renaissance was a time of rebirth, new ideas, and grand exploration! Our Gracious Majesty, Queen Elizabeth I, invites all who attend the faire to embark on a special voyage. This journey will challenge your mind and transport you back in history to uncover the wonders of an era long past.

Your Voyage Instructions

This guide outlines the stops you must visit to complete your voyage. At each stop, gather knowledge and collect the seal needed to complete your task. At the end of your journey, the Queen—or perhaps one of her trusted courtiers—will quiz you on the discoveries you’ve made and ensure you’ve collected the required seals.

A Knighting Ceremony will be held daily at 3 PM at the Royal Court for those achieving lord or ladyship status. However, you may turn in your completed voyage until 5 PM daily to claim your prize.

Signs Along Your Journey

Look for exclamation marks posted along the town’s paths to guide you to each important stop. Each location will immerse you in Renaissance life, teaching you about this remarkable period of exploration, innovation, and culture. Those who successfully complete their voyage will receive a special prize and an opportunity to be knighted by Her Majesty.

Mini Voyage for Young Explorers

For Her Majesty’s younger subjects, a Mini Voyage is available! Stop by the Queen’s Royal Court to obtain your treasure map. Complete the map’s activities to receive a token of appreciation from the Queen herself.

7. Havashire Royal Court

  • Why was Queen Elizabeth I concerned about the Spanish Armada, and what did its defeat mean for England?

8. Hands-on History

  • Did knights and their horses ever travel by ship, and if so, where were they going?

9. Banat Tabla Guild

  • Meet the dancers of Banat Tabla and learn a traditional dance move. How do these dances connect to life and culture in the Renaissance?

10. Sea Dogs of Freeport

  • Test your luck and wit in a game of chance with the Sea Dogs of Freeport. What did games like these mean for sailors at sea?

11. The Vikings

  • Visit the Viking encampment and play a traditional game. What does this game reveal about Viking culture and pastimes?

12. First Aid Booth

  • Step into the Barber Surgeon’s quarters, filled with the scents of tonics and the hum of practiced hands. Why were barbers often surgeons during this time?

13. The Blacksmith Guild

  • Hear the clang of metal and watch sparks fly as blacksmiths demonstrate their craft. Why are they called "blacksmiths," and how did their work support life at sea?

14. Pirate Ship

  • Upon completing your voyage, return to the Pirate Ship and take a “Self-portrait of thyself and crewmates. Be sure to tag #Tworiversfaire—Then return to the first port you entered (Quest Tent)—to claim your well-deserved prize.

Important Notes

  • Daily Knighting Ceremonies: Held at the Royal Court promptly at 3:00 PM, honoring those who have achieved lord or ladyship status.

  • Prizes: Available until 5:00 PM each day of the faire for all victorious voyage-goers.
